BroJohn's General Cigar/Villazon box date decoder ring - updated.

This is an update of an abridged version of the 'Villazon decoder ring'
that I've published and updated over the past three years. It is provided
as a guide to converting 'box codes' to production dates proprietary to
Villazon/General Cigar products ONLY.

The markings from other producers, ie., CAO, Torano, Padron, Perdomo, Fuente, Altadis, Placencia or other suppliers are proprietary to those makers, follow a different scheme, and are not covered here.

This marking scheme commenced in January 1999 with the code 5HM. It appears that the initial codes began in the middle of the range numbers 0-9 (with '5'), and the middle of the alphabet A-Z (with 'M', the 13th of 26 letters.); hence the initial code of 5HM.

There are three variants of the 'box code' marking scheme.

1.) The 'box codes' from 01/1999 to 12/2003 are a three character alphanumeric stamp on the bottom of the box in the form: number- letter- letter; eg '9DS'.

2.) Commencing 01/2004, the format changed to a five character alphnumeric sequence in the form number- number- letter- letter- letter; eg '10HCU'.

3.) The 'box codes' from *some* DOMINICAN production of Bolivars and Macanudo Vintage are a three character alphanumeric code in a non-standard form where:
the pattern is letter- letter- number *or* letter- number- letter. In this scheme, the first letter always an 'S'. Possibly the manufacture of these products were contracted out, or there is some other reason the code pattern is non-standard. The overall meaning of these 'S' codes is unknown and will not be covered here.

Here's the break down of the code for first two alphanumeric forms.

Example one:

'9HP'

9 -- One digit numeral indicates year of manufacture.

H -- First alpha character is country of origin.

P -- Last alpha character represents the Month of production.

Example two:

'10HCU'

10 -- two digit numeral indicates year of manufacture.

H -- First alpha character is country of origin.

C -- Middle alpha character is believed to be a factory code.

U -- Last alpha character represents the Month of production.

1.) The numeric digits(s) represent the year of production.

5 = 1999, 6 = 2000, 7 = 2001, 8 = 2002, 9 = 2003, 10 = 2004, etc.

2.) The first alpha character is a manifest constant that indicates the
country of production. One of: 'H', 'D', 'M', 'X', or 'K'.

H = Honduras
D = Dominican
M = Miami
K = Jamaica
X = Jamaica (Obsolete)

3.) The middle alpha character, if present, is a letter that has an unknown
representation; but I surmise that it indicates the factory of production,
though this is unconfirmed. I also believe that it to be a constant.

To date, only Honduran production with the newer markings has been
seen. The middle character has either been a 'C' or a 'D'. 'D' is
probably 'Danli' and the 'C' possibly represents 'Cofradia' or 'Copan'.
As of this writing (3/5/2004), I haven't seen enough samples to come to
any firm conclusion.

4.) The last alpha character is a letter that represents the Month that the
cigars were produced. This character advances and rotates serially; All
letters are used.

The last alpha in the sequence is NOT a constant relative to the month, and
changes year to year. That is, the alphabet rotates serially through the months, month-to-month, year after year. Note the last character in the following example; the MONTH letter is advanced 'monthly' so that:

5HN = Feb 1999
5HO = Mar 1999
5HP = Apr 1999
5HQ = May 1999

...etc.

It appears that following the letter 'Z', the last character cycles back
to 'A' regardless of the year. The letter then continues to sequentially
advance at one letter per month.

5HX = Dec 1999
6HY = Jan 2000 *** note digit advance from 5 to 6 for new year ***
6HZ = Feb 2000
6HA = Mar 2000 *** note 'Z' -> 'A' *** ...a midyear change/rollover.
6HB = Apr 2000
6HC = May 2000

...and so on.

Addendum: A table of date codes and dates for General Cigar production
follows. The table uses '_' for the country of origin. In the second form,
the table uses '__' after 2003 to indicate the codes for the production
factory and the country of origin.

Continuing the date code structure from inception in 01/1999 into the
future gives:
